Simplify Group Balances with Splitkaro

Before Simplify Balances, Alice pays Ben $30 and Ben pays Cara $30: two payments. After, Alice pays Cara $30 directly: one payment, and Ben is settled.

Managing shared expenses with friends, family, or roommates can easily become a tangled web of who owes what to whom. To make settling up easier, Splitkaro has a feature called Simplify Balances. Here’s how it works, with a simple example.

What is Simplify Balances?

Simplify Balances minimizes the number of payments needed to settle all debts within a group. Instead of everyone paying everyone they owe, Splitkaro works out the fewest payments that settle the group, so people are paid back sooner and with less back-and-forth.

How Does It Work? A Simple Example

Take three friends, Alice, Ben, and Cara, who share expenses in a Splitkaro group. Their balances are: Alice owes Ben $30, and Ben owes Cara $30.

Without Simplify Balances, Alice pays Ben $30, and then Ben pays Cara $30. That’s two payments, with Ben acting as a middleman. With Simplify Balances, Splitkaro sees that the debts cancel out through Ben, so Alice pays Cara $30 directly.

One payment settles both debts, and Ben is square without paying or receiving anything.

Turning Simplify Balances On or Off

You don’t need to do anything: Simplify Balances is on by default in every group that offers it. Open a group’s Balances tab and you’ll see “Balances are Simplified by default.”

If your group would rather settle each debt with the person who is owed directly, a group admin can switch Simplify Balances off, either on the Balances tab or in the group’s settings. Other members can ask an admin to change it.

Simplify Balances isn’t offered in Business and Couple groups.

Why Use Simplify Balances?

  • Efficiency: fewer payments to settle the same debts.
  • Clarity: a simpler picture of who owes whom.
  • Speed: people get paid back faster.

Simplify Balances is free and already on in your groups, so the next time you settle up, check the Balances tab and let Splitkaro do the untangling.
