Free rent split calculator

Split the rent, fair to every room.

Describe each room — its size, an attached bathroom, a balcony, how much light it gets — and the calculator works out a fair rent for each one. Shared space is split per person, rooms by what they offer. No sign-up, no app needed.

Required. Everything else is optional.

How much of the house is shared among all?

A living room, kitchen and a common bathroom. Everyone uses shared space equally, so the more of it there is, the closer everyone’s rent comes out.

No need to measure. Compare the rooms by eye, or leave them all at Medium if they are about the same. Type the square footage only if you know it.

How the rent is worked out

Shared space per person, rooms by what they offer. These are the rules of thumb the calculator uses.

Shared space, split per person

Everyone uses the living room, kitchen and hallways about equally, so that part of the rent is split per head. How big that part is depends on how much of the house is shared among all: 35% of the rent when it is small, 45% when average, 55% when large.

On a ₹36,000 rent with average shared space, ₹16,200 is for shared space: ₹5,400 for each of three flatmates.

Rooms, split by size

The rest is split by bedroom size. Pick Small, Medium, Large or Very large, or type the square footage if you know it. Because shared space is already split evenly, a room twice the size does not pay twice the rent.

Rooms of 150, 120 and 90 sq ft on a ₹36,000 rent pay ₹13,650, ₹12,000 and ₹10,350.

Adjusted for what makes a room better

An attached bathroom adds 15% to a room’s value; a balcony, great light or a large wardrobe add 8% each. Poor light takes off 15%, and no wardrobe or a room facing the road take off 8% each.

Give the 150 sq ft room an attached bathroom and the 90 sq ft room poor light, and the split becomes ₹14,656, ₹11,839 and ₹9,505.

Doing this more than once?

The app keeps a running ledger, so nobody has to remember who paid last time. Scan a paper bill or auto-import an online one, split it item-wise, send reminders, and settle up faster.

Personal, couple and business expenses live there too, all linked together, so everything you spend sits in one place.

What our users are saying

Good color UI and user friendly. Best alternative to Splitwise considering they are monetising all simple basic features.

Splitting rent, answered

How do you split rent fairly between flatmates?

Split the shared space per person and the bedrooms by how good they are. Everyone uses the kitchen and living room about equally, so that part is shared evenly; the rest goes by room size, adjusted for an attached bathroom, a balcony, light and storage. This calculator does both and shows the breakdown for every room.

How much more should the room with an attached bathroom pay?

This calculator adds 15% to that room’s value. In a flat of three identical rooms on a ₹36,000 rent, that comes to ₹12,628 for the room with the bathroom and ₹11,686 for each of the others, about ₹940 a month more.

How do I split rent by room size?

Use each bedroom’s floor area, but split the shared space per person first. Rooms of 150, 120 and 90 sq ft on a ₹36,000 rent then pay ₹13,650, ₹12,000 and ₹10,350. Splitting the whole rent by bedroom area would charge the big room for a bigger share of the kitchen too.

Why is shared space split per person and not by room size?

Because everyone uses the kitchen, living room and hallways about equally, whatever their bedroom is like. Splitting that part per head keeps the gap between rooms reasonable: with two rooms on a ₹36,000 rent, one twice the size of the other pays ₹21,300 against ₹14,700, about 45% more rather than double.

What if two people share a room?

Mark the room as shared by two. It pays for two people’s use of the shared space plus its own room share, and the calculator shows what each of the two pays.

How do I split the security deposit?

In the same proportion as the rent. Enter the deposit in place of the monthly rent, keep the rooms as they are, and the calculator splits it the same way.

What if our flat values things differently?

The adjustments are rules of thumb, not a standard. If you agree that a balcony is worth more, or a bathroom less, settle the figures between you and enter each share as an exact amount in the bill splitter instead.

Do my flatmates need the app to see the split?

No. The link opens in any browser and shows what each room pays, with no sign-up and no install. The app is for when you want rent, bills and everything else in one running ledger, with reminders, instead of working it out each month.

Is a shared rent split link private?

The split travels inside the link itself, and nothing is stored on our servers. Anyone holding the link can open it, so send it to your flatmates rather than posting it publicly.
