Personal expense managers

The best personal expense manager apps in India.

There is really only one question that matters here, and it is not which app has the most features. It is whether you are willing to type in every expense. Answer that and the shortlist picks itself.

We make Splitkaro, one of the four apps below.

The short answer

Splitkaro if you would rather not type, because it reads the bank and UPI SMS your phone already gets. Money Manager if you want real budgets and double-entry books, Monefy for the fastest manual entry, axio if you also want credit.

Splitkaro

That’s us

Spending that tracks itself

  • Bank and UPI debit alerts parsed on your device, so most entries never get typed
  • PDF statement import, including password-protected ones
  • Anything shared with a flatmate or friend splits in the same app
  • Free unlimited expenses and free overall analytics
  • Set a recurring expense once and it is created for you every month
  • No weekly or monthly budgets yet
  • One currency, and no web app beyond view-only shared links
  • Custom categories and expense search are Premium; UPI-share is limited on Free

Money Manager

Keeping proper books

  • Automatic double-entry bookkeeping, which nothing else here does
  • Budgets by week, month and year, compared against actuals
  • Multiple currencies, and a PC view over Wi-Fi
  • Every entry is manual, which is the whole discipline of it
  • The free version caps you at ten accounts
  • Nothing is shared: no splitting, no groups

Monefy

The least friction per entry

  • An expense recorded in two taps, which is the point of the app
  • Backs up to your own Google Drive or Dropbox rather than a company server
  • 150+ currencies, converted automatically
  • Statements import manually, with no bank connection
  • Recurring transactions and unlimited accounts are premium
  • No splitting or shared groups

axio

Tracking bundled with credit

  • The continuation of Walnut, with a personal finance manager inside it
  • Buy Now Pay Later and personal loans in the same place
  • The app is built around lending, with tracking as one part
  • You take the credit products alongside the tracker

Questions, answered

Which expense manager works automatically in India?

Splitkaro reads the bank and UPI debit alerts your phone already receives and parses them on the device rather than forwarding them anywhere. It works on Android, and on iOS through the Shortcuts app. Money Manager and Monefy are both manual; axio automates but is a lending app.

Which is the best free personal expense manager?

Splitkaro is free for unlimited expenses with free overall analytics. Money Manager and Monefy both have genuinely usable free tiers, with their better features behind a small paid upgrade.

Do any of them split expenses with other people?

Only Splitkaro. The other three track one person’s money, so a shared flat or a group trip has to live somewhere else.

What happened to the Walnut app?

Walnut became axio, which describes itself as formerly Capital Float, Walnut and Walnut 369. A money manager is still inside it, but the app now leads with Buy Now Pay Later and personal loans. See what else tracks your spending

Which one is best for budgeting?

Money Manager. It runs weekly, monthly and annual budgets against a double-entry ledger, which is deeper than anything Splitkaro offers today.

Let your bank do the data entry

Your bank SMS becomes an expense on its own. Anything shared splits with the group. Free on Android and iOS.
