Automatic UPI expense trackers

UPI expense trackers that fill themselves in.

Every UPI payment leaves a trail: a debit SMS from your bank, a record at the bank itself, and a line in the UPI app you paid from. An automatic tracker reads one of those three. Which one it reads decides what it catches and what it misses.

We make Splitkaro, one of the five apps below.

The short answer

Use Splitkaro. Your bank sends an SMS after every UPI payment, and Splitkaro turns it into an expense, on Android or iPhone, whether you paid with GPay, PhonePe or Paytm. Split something with friends or flatmates and that goes in the same app. Don’t want to give SMS access? Try Fold. Only ever pay with Paytm? Its Spend Summary is enough.

Three ways an app sees your UPI spends

  • Bank SMS Your bank texts you after every payment, and the app reads that text. Works with every UPI app. Misses UPI Lite payments, which don’t get an SMS of their own. iPhones don’t let apps read SMS, so on iPhone this needs a Shortcuts automation.
  • Account Aggregator You give permission once through an RBI-licensed aggregator, and the app pulls payments straight from your bank. No SMS access needed, but your bank has to be on the network.
  • In-app history GPay, PhonePe and Paytm know what you paid through them, and nothing else.

Questions, answered

Which expense tracker has automatic UPI SMS import?

Splitkaro, for free. It imports the debit SMS your bank sends for every UPI payment, whichever UPI app you paid from, and parses it on your phone, on Android and on iPhone. FinArt imports SMS too, but only on its paid plan. Fold tracks UPI through Account Aggregator instead of SMS. Paytm shows a Spend Summary, but only for payments made through Paytm.

Can an iPhone app track my UPI spends from SMS?

Not by reading your inbox, because iOS does not let apps read SMS. Splitkaro uses an automation in Apple’s Shortcuts app that hands each bank SMS to Splitkaro as it arrives, so it works on iPhone as well as Android. FinArt also tracks automatically on iPhone, on its paid plan. axio is Android only.

Is it safe to let an app read my SMS?

On Google Play, only apps whose core feature is SMS-based money management may ask for SMS access, and Google reviews each one. The policy forbids sharing your non-financial or personal SMS. Splitkaro parses the alerts on your device, so the texts are not forwarded anywhere.

Why are some UPI payments missing from my tracker?

Usually UPI Lite. Those small payments come from a wallet on your phone, so your bank does not send an SMS for each one. Share the payment into Splitkaro, or import a bank statement, to fill the gap.

Does ET Money still track expenses?

No. ET Money confirmed in April 2025 that expense tracking is no longer available, and the app is now about investments.

What is the Account Aggregator framework?

An RBI system that lets you share bank data with an app through a licensed aggregator, with consent you can revoke. Fold uses it to pull transactions without reading SMS. It only works for banks that have joined the network.
