Expense apps for roommates

Expense splitting apps for flatmates in India.

A flat runs on the same bills every month: rent, electricity, Wi-Fi, the cook, the maid, the milk. The app that works for flatmates is the one that remembers those bills for you, splits them fairly when rooms are not equal, and chases the person who has not paid.

We make Splitkaro, one of the four apps below.

The short answer

Splitkaro for most flats in India: rent and bills are set once and come back every month, your bank SMS adds the rest, and reminders do the chasing. Splitwise if your flat already uses it and stays under the free daily limit, Tricount if you never want a paid tier, Settle Up if you want it in a browser too.

Splitkaro

That’s us

A flat that runs on the same bills every month

  • Rent, Wi-Fi, maid and gas set once as recurring bills, free, each with its own split and paid or unpaid tracking
  • Split by room, by head or by item, and skip whoever was away
  • Reminders go out for you, so nobody has to chase in the group chat
  • Your bank SMS adds expenses on its own, on Android, and on iPhone via Shortcuts
  • Settle over UPI; flatmates without an account can still be added
  • Free unlimited expenses, and no ads even on the free plan
  • No currency conversion, which a flat rarely needs
  • No web app; shared expense links open in a browser, view only

  • Started out as a rent-splitting site, and still the best-known name
  • Settle up through Paytm in India
  • A full web version as well as the apps
  • The free plan limits how many expenses you add a day and shows ads
  • Nothing is added automatically from SMS or UPI
  • No personal spending tracking alongside the flat

Tricount

  • Works offline and syncs later

  • Recurring expenses are not among its listed features, so rent goes in by hand
  • Nothing is added automatically from SMS or UPI

  • Works on Android, iPhone and the web

Questions, answered

What is the best expense splitting app for roommates in India?

Splitkaro, for most flats. Rent and bills are set once and come back every month, each with its own split, your bank SMS adds the rest, and reminders chase whoever has not paid. It is free for unlimited expenses.

How should flatmates split rent when rooms are different sizes?

Split the shared space equally and the bedrooms by what each one offers: size, an attached bathroom, a balcony, light. Our free rent split calculator works it out room by room and gives you a link to send the flat. Try the rent split calculator →

Which app handles recurring rent and bills for free?

Splitkaro and Splitwise both do. Settle Up keeps recurring expenses for Premium, and Tricount does not list them, so rent goes in by hand each month.

Can we pay rent by credit card and split it?

Mostly not any more. CRED, PhonePe and Paytm stopped credit card rent payments in September 2025, after new RBI rules for payment aggregators. Pay rent the usual way, add it to your flat group once as a recurring expense, and settle the shares over UPI.

Do all my flatmates need to install the app?

Not in Splitkaro. Only you need an account; flatmates without one can be added to the home group, and you keep track of their share.
